It could be out of water (duh,) but also if you Have "hard water" over time it may clog up steamer parts. or the heating element went bad. seeing as most steamers are less than $50. might as well buy another one Edit: Yes you could use various things to clean it, warm distilled water, maybe a toothpick, but do not use any kind of abrasive cleaner or Drain de-clogger. that stuff could stick to the plastic particles and come out when you use the steamer and go into the food.  More

Thinking about buying one of those electronic multi stack food steamers and wondering if I'll use it for most meals or just stick it in the cupboard like some other useless electronic gadgets. Like to hear if people think they're a great idea.  More

I love to steam but I didn't buy anything fancy. For less than $10, I bought a metal collapsable steamer basket (most grocery stores carry them in their cooking gadget/supplies aisle). You can use it in one of your regular pots. With an inch of water on the bottom of a pot, and a steamer basket on top, throw in your favorite chopped veggies (For example, one of the following: green beans, asparagus, broccoli, chunks of squash), set your stove on medium high and in 10-20 minutes they are ready. Just make sure to check the water level doesn't run out after about 15 minutes. You'll figure out what works for you after a few tries. The basket takes up no space in the cabinet either. Just store it in one of your pots when it's clean & dry.  More

I have a Westinghouse food steamer and I can not find the operating manual that came along with it. Does someone know where I can go online to find something like this? Many thanks.  More

Is it a White-Westinghouse, or an antique? What model number, usually on the bottom.  More

I just bought one off e-bay and was really excited, but I'm finding it takes FOREVER to cook anything. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for all electric steamers of if I got a dodgy one? Personal experience would be good please. I tried to cook some pieces of apple and pear for my baby today (very small pieces and they weren't cooked after being in for an hour. I think maybe I got a dodgy one... It did come with that manual, I followed the instructions. It tells me that the time is WAY faster to cook things than it is. Contacted person I bought it from, she said it was always like that... I got an electric one coz I kept getting distracted and burning the one on the stove, thank you for the suggestion though!  More

You got a lousy one. I can steam carrots in about 10-15 minutes or so in my Oster.  More

Is there a website that gives cooking times for electric food steamers? I have a Tefal, and the instruction booklet only gives times for a few items. Thanks.  More

Veg like, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots etc, all take around 25 to 30 minutes similar veggies have similar times, New Potato's take around 30 minutes, two portions of rice .... around 40 minutes. Chicken fillets, med size around 40 minutes and normal size portion of fish around 30 minutes. I don't know of any websites hun, but i have had mine for years and cook all sorts in it. I usually check new foods after around 20 minutes and guess roughly how long i need to add. Mine is three tier. If you are cooking meats at the same time as veg it always goes on the lower tier. If i am doing all veggie type foods i would stack with the larger more dense items on the lower tier and work my way up, such as.... New pots, lower tier, carrots and brussels middle tier, cauliflower and broccoli top tier and put the lot on for 30 mins, everything ready at the same time.  More
